Student Leadership

Student leadership in secondary school plays a pivotal role in shaping the development of young individuals, fostering a sense of responsibility, collaboration, and empowerment.

By taking on leadership roles, students not only learn to manage tasks and make decisions but also develop valuable life skills such as communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution. These experiences help students become active participants in their school community, inspiring their peers and contributing to a positive school culture. Moreover, student leadership provides opportunities for students to advocate for change, voice concerns, and be part of initiatives that create a better school environment.

Key Values of Student Leadership:
  • Responsibility: Leaders are accountable for their actions and the outcomes of their decisions.
  • Collaboration: Encourages teamwork and cooperation among peers.
  • Empathy: Fosters understanding and consideration for others’ perspectives and needs.
  • Communication: Develops clear, effective, and respectful communication skills.
  • Problem-Solving: Enhances critical thinking and creative solutions to challenges.
  • Confidence: Builds self-assurance and the ability to take initiative.
  • Advocacy: Gives students a platform to speak up for what matters to them and their peers.
  • Community Engagement: Encourages active involvement in the school and local community.
Current Opportunities for Student Leadership

Student Council

The Student Council at Walney School is a dynamic and diverse committee comprising nearly 40 students, each representing their form across all year groups. This inclusive group meets regularly every half term to address key issues and work on initiatives aimed at improving both the school and the local community. Through active participation, the council has been instrumental in driving positive change, such as fostering a more inclusive environment that recognizes and celebrates the diversity of the student body. Additionally, the council has contributed to the development of the PE curriculum, promoting gender-neutral approaches to sports and helping to challenge outdated notions of ‘gendered’ activities that are prevalent across education as a whole. These efforts not only enhance the school’s culture but also empower students to take ownership of their school experience and work toward meaningful improvements.

Senior Students
At Walney School, senior student leadership roles are earned through a rigorous application and interview process that takes place at the end of Year 10. Students are selected based on their consistent attendance, adherence to school uniform and behavior standards, and their engagement with the overall school culture. Senior students are expected to embody the school’s core values, demonstrating leadership, responsibility, and positive behavior. Their duties include mentoring Year 7 students, guiding them through their first year in secondary school, and actively participating in tasks around the school. These students are key figures in promoting the ethos of Walney School, including upholding the ‘Walney Ways’ and encouraging a sense of unity and respect. From this group of senior students, the Head Students are elected by Year 7 and staff after delivering formal speeches to present their vision and leadership capabilities.

SSAT Leadership Award
The SSAT Student Leadership Award is an exciting opportunity at Walney School that focuses on developing and recognizing leadership skills in students. Every Senior Student is automatically enrolled in the award, which helps them to further their leadership abilities while fulfilling their duties within the school. Additionally, the award is open to all students in Year 11 on a voluntary basis, allowing even more individuals to develop essential skills like teamwork, communication, and decision-making. The benefits of the award are numerous, including gaining recognition for their leadership efforts, enhancing their CVs for future opportunities, and building confidence in their abilities. In line with the school’s vision for growth, there are plans to expand this initiative across the entire school, starting from Year 7, to ensure that all students at Walney School are provided with the opportunity to develop leadership skills from the very beginning of their secondary school journey. This initiative aims to foster a culture of leadership and responsibility that extends throughout the school community.

Student Leadership Development
The development of student leadership at Walney School continues to grow, with exciting opportunities designed to empower students at every stage of their school journey. From the SSAT Student Leadership Award to mentorship programs and roles within the Student Council, students are encouraged to take on leadership responsibilities that shape their personal growth and positively impact the school community. As the school continues to expand leadership opportunities, students can look forward to even more ways to get involved and make a difference in the near future. Stay tuned for what’s to come!
